Discover Halal Express Kabab House

I first stumbled into Halal Express Kabab House on a rainy Tuesday when I was driving past 599 Hicksville Rd, Bethpage, NY 11714, United States, starving after a long consulting day. I expected a quick counter meal. What I got instead was a crash course in how a neighborhood halal diner can quietly outshine bigger chains.

The menu is short but focused, which is something the National Restaurant Association often points out as a hallmark of well-run small eateries. You’ll find classics like chicken over rice, lamb gyros, kofta kababs, falafel wraps, and buttery naan on the side. I ordered the mixed platter with chicken and lamb, and while I waited I chatted with the guy behind the counter who explained how they marinate their meats overnight with yogurt, garlic, and a spice blend they grind in-house. That detail alone told me they aren’t cutting corners.

When the plate arrived, it was piled high with saffron-tinted basmati rice, tender chunks of grilled meat, crisp lettuce, tomatoes, and their house white sauce. The lamb was juicy without being greasy, and the chicken had that smoky char that usually only comes from well-seasoned grills. According to research published by the Institute of Food Technologists, marinating meat for at least eight hours can improve moisture retention by up to 10 percent, and you can taste that science working here.

A week later I brought my cousin, who reviews halal spots across Long Island as a hobby, and he zeroed in on their kofta kabab. He explained how properly balanced kofta should have enough fat to stay moist but not so much that it falls apart on the skewer. Watching the cook shape the meat mixture by hand, you can see the process: beef and lamb are mixed with onions that have been squeezed dry, parsley, cumin, coriander, and just enough egg to bind it. That attention to technique is why the kabab holds together and still melts in your mouth.

People often toss around phrases like best halal food in Bethpage or hidden gem diner, but the reviews here actually back it up. On most food apps the ratings hover close to five stars, with customers praising fast service, generous portions, and consistent flavor. I did notice a few comments mentioning that parking can be tight during dinner rush, which is fair given the strip-mall location. That’s probably the only real limitation I’ve run into.

What also stands out is the crowd. You see families picking up takeout, construction workers grabbing lunch specials, and college kids splitting a giant platter. The Centers for Disease Control has published data showing that nearly 60 percent of Americans eat out at least once a week, and places like this thrive because they combine speed with real cooking. You’re not just getting fried mystery meat; you’re watching skewers hit the grill and fresh salads being tossed behind the counter.

I’ve eaten at more polished Mediterranean restaurants in Manhattan, but the vibe here is different. It’s casual, almost old-school diner style, with a TV in the corner and the smell of cumin and grilled onions in the air. One afternoon I overheard a delivery driver ask for extra hot sauce, and the cook laughed, warning him it was really spicy sauce. The guy shrugged, took the container, and later came back red-faced but smiling, saying it was worth it.

If you care about halal certification, the staff are open about their suppliers and preparation methods, which builds trust. They don’t plaster certificates everywhere, but they’ll gladly explain where their meat comes from and how they keep the kitchen separate from any non-halal items. That transparency is something consumer advocates like the Halal Food Council USA consistently encourage in food service.

Whether you’re checking out locations on your phone, scrolling through reviews, or just following your nose past the storefront, this spot delivers a reliable meal every time. For me, it’s become the default lunch meeting place when I’m in Bethpage, because I know I can bring anyone here and they’ll leave full, happy, and already planning their next order.

  • My family likes the food. I can't give it 5 stars because there were no extra. desserts displayed, white sause was more like vinegary ranch with dry herbs, I always expect white sause with fresh dairy and fresh herbs. I also expected bigger variety. Nevertheless I haven't found anything better around this part of Long Island so I give it 4 stars

  • This is my 1st experience at this restaurant...Food is great and service is fine. Kebab are little dry but Lamb Chops are exceptionally well. I will try in future.

  • Fresh and very authentic middle eastern fare. Quick and warm service. The place is clean and fairly priced. They serve a cardamom infused tea which was out of this world. Highly recommend this place.

  • Just tried this kebab spot and everything was spot on. I had the chicken tikka and the combo — both were great. The rice was super tasty, and the chicken was packed with flavor. The white and green sauces were amazing, and everything came hot and really well packed, which I appreciated. It’s one of those places you might miss if you’re not looking, but totally worth checking out. I’ll definitely be back.

  • Best Kabuli Palaw I have ever had - and it is my favorite dish! The white sauce and green sauces are particularly good. All for an extremely good price. Jawad and Meena run an amazing restaurant - it is worth coming back just for them! Tashakor!!

  • I'm very happy I came here. The chicken that came with my chicken over rice was very flavorful & rich tasting. It was better than the chicken over rice plates I've gotten from other places in the area. The people behind the counter were also super nice & friendly. I would recommend coming here

  • I recently tried the Halal Chicken Kofta Platter, and it was a satisfying and flavorful meal. The kofta was juicy, well-seasoned with Middle Eastern spices, and cooked perfectly — not too dry, which can sometimes be an issue with chicken. The portion size was generous, making it a great value for the price. The platter came with fragrant basmati rice, a fresh side salad, and a drizzle of white sauce and hot sauce that elevated the entire dish. The sauces were balanced nicely — creamy
